We are delighted to work in partnership with Scotwest Credit Union to offer you travel insurance. This policy includes cover for HIV-related claims, for example if you have to cancel, cut short or even extend your stay because of an HIV-related illness. It will also cover you if you need to be repatriated to the UK for medical reasons. Uniquely, we will also cover you for additional costs in obtaining a repeat prescription if your medication is lost or stolen while you're away. If it's difficult for you to obtain your usually medication in the country you're visiting, we will pay the courier costs if you arrange for new medication to be sent to you from the UK. Why take out travel insurance? Even if you're well and your CD4 count and viral load level is good, you'd be very wise to take out HIV-inclusive travel insurance. If you take out travel insurance that doesn't include HIV, there is a danger that if you were to become ill, the insurers could decide that, in their opinion, your illness was HIV-related, even if you felt it wasn't. They could decline your claim. By taking out our policy, you don't run that risk. What if I have a European Health Insurance Card? A European Health Insurance Card merely puts you on the same basis as an insured person in the European country you're visiting. It doesn't necessarily mean you'll get free treatment and you can obtain treatment only in State hospitals. The card doesn't protect you against cancellation, curtailment or repatriation costs or cover for loss of medication, baggage etc. Are you travelling with someone who isn't HIV+? If you have a travelling companion and they're not also covered by this insurance policy, they could find that if they make a claim (eg cancellation, curtailment or extending your policy) that's directly or indirectly linked to you being ill, their claim could be declined. Their insurers would investigate if you have any pre-existing medical condition and they could then decide that, in their opinion, your illness was HIV-related. They could then say to your travelling companion that they don't meet HIV-related claims and decline it. We can cover someone who's travelling with someone who's HIV+. We may well be able to cover any pre-existing medical conditions the travelling companion has, subject to them contacting our medical screening service (for further information, click here). Scotwest Credit Union will receive a donation for each policy sold to members.
